TOURISM Minister Peter David has welcomed comments of Director of the National Geographic Society's Center for Sustainable Destinations, Jonathan Tourtellot that Grenada is among the ten great places to currently have its beauty unspoiled.

"We have always argued that sustainable tourism is important in that it is tourism that leaves the island free from some of the negative effects of mass tourism as seen in some other destinations," said the tourism Minister.

"Additionally, as I said in the last budget debate, we will be moving in the new year to embark on a programme that will put Grenada on the map as one of the most ecologically friendly destinations in the world," David said after reading the article which appeared in a recent edition of the USA Today online publication.

Tourtellot in an interview with Tim Smight for USA TODAY puts Grenada at the top of the list and describes the destination as one of the last Caribbean island countries not yet overwhelmed with huge, all-inclusive resorts.

The beaches are beautiful, the forested and mountainous interior is ecologically rich, and the capital of St. George is the most attractive historic port town in the Caribbean,"' io said.

Grenada is followed by Guanajuato, Mexico, a city Founded in 1554 which is located about 230 miles northwest of Mexico City in the country's historic silver-mining region.

"This hilly, Spanish-colonial city teems with life and history," Tourtellot says. "That presents a nice balance for both tourists and residents. Several of the city's historic buildings have been tastefully converted into hotels and restaurants, and the narrow streets of the city center are delightful to wander through."

Third on the list is Ashland, Oregon, which is famous for its annual Shakespeare Festival. It is also one of the USA's most historic and appealing small towns. The others on the list are: Isle of Skye, Scotland; Mackinac Island, Michigan; Cape Breton Island, Nova Scotia; Wachau Valley, Austria; Chaco Culture National Historical Park, New Mexico; Northeast Kingdom, Vermont and Coastal Fjords, Norway.

With respect to the capital St. George's, David said that as the Parliamentary Representative for the area and the Minister of Tourism, he was proud that St. George's is not only very historic but also very attractive.

"We have plans in the pipeline to ensure that the capital retains its historic character and that it continues be one of the most beautiful destinations in the region," he said.
