PIA seeks
to develop a holistic strategy for community development in a participatory &
sustainable manner. PIA directorship's training and understanding of the participatory approach come the efforts of the Caribbean Natural Resource Institute, CANARI . We have adopted National Geographic Society’s, Center for
Sustainable Destinations’ Geotourism strategy , which is both holistic and
participatory. PIA will employ the development of an eParticipatory platform, "GrenadaMacometer.org", to
facilitate the transparent and effective administrating & planning; this
website platform can also facilitate community assistance for development and
sustainability from the support of econsultancy & eCommerce. Most of the
entire objective is to develop & sustain socio-economic growth,
independently driven by communities, instigated by the mapping of community, and
fueled by awareness development, dissemination of information and networking.
Geotourism
embraces sustainable development through tourism and focuses on the holistic
development of destination; its ecology, heritage, culture and way of life of a
community and its people. It is about new levels of relationships between the
host Community and the visitor. Through visitor/community interaction,
respective cultures are explored, ideas and information are exchanged and new
alliances are made.
This
concept of sustainability cannot be successful without the participation of
communities in its development and management. It therefore fosters
opportunities at the community level for locals who wish to participate more
fully in the tourist industry. This may range from establishing bed and
breakfast accommodation in a rural home to creating income-generating tourism
opportunities for an entire village. We partner with the website "Homestays Grenada" for the promotion of community accommodations. PIA will be targeting the volunteer tourism market that will assist in sustaining and enhanceing the community's development. For this we have partnered with the Global SAVE Travel Alliance development of Science, Academia, Volunteer, Education (SAVE) Travel .
The tourism industry is Grenada’s largest income earner. Community Tourism can be an
equitable way of distributing this potential income. However the road to
developing community is a long term one and relies on the following:
